Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple, Rameswararm

12 Mar

It was a long wish to go to Rameswaram. I had been to this temple  earlier during 198o’s. It happened just like that. It was not planned. I applied for LTC, when I was working with M/s SPIC. They sanctioned me but I was forced to avail a week holiday. Self and my wife started without planning. On reaching Tuticorin bus stand a bus was waiting to Rameswararm. Boarded in the bus and reached Rameswaram and had dharshan of Sri Ramanathaswajmy. But now 35 years passed.  Due to age I could not recollect my memories completely.  Also I would like to do some pooja to my ancestors.  This time planned in advance. Since my son and daughter could not joined with us, my son booked  in for me and my wife.

Started our yathra from Chennai on 13th March 2015 through Sethu express and reached Rameswaram on 14th March 2015, Saturday.  Booked for the day time stay at  Trichy swamykal Nilayam  through Mr Nachiappan who is one of my well wisher on the south mada street. The sasthirikal was also arranged for performing the pooja through the caretaker.

CHOZHA & PALLAVA PERIOD  TEMPLES, JAIN CAVE  HERITAGE TOUR IN AND AROUND CHEYYUR, TAMIL NADU, THROUGH REACH FOUNDATION.

On 15th December 2012,  I was fortunate enough to join with the Tour arranged By R.E.A.C.H foundation, Chennai to the Chozha and Pallava period   Temples and a Jain Cave in and around Cheyyur. We, 30 members from various parts of the city  started from Chennai in two vans  around 5.30 Hrs to Cheyyur via Mathuranthakam. We have followed the following route to cover our planned visit.

  1. JAIN CAVE  at Karunkunru, Onampakkam.

This Jain cave is on the hill near Onampakkam, which is on the way to Cheyyur from Mathranthagam. From Onampakkam the hill is about 3 KM on the north side. This cave and the sculptures are not known to the locals very much. Some people told us it is Buddha sculptures. One of the local man guided us  to the near by hill and we returned back to the original hill, which was named as Kurathi Malai. Steps were constructed up to half way. Understand that this hill was recovered back from the quarry after a legal battle.  We had seen sculptures in three places and Tamil inscription at the first level. In the first level 23rd Theerthangarar  in standing posture under the snake hood with Yakshan and Yakshini on both sides.

In the Second and third level the Theerthangarars are in sitting postures          ( Artha Pariyangasanam ). The Third level Theerthangar may be Aadhi Nathar and at the base lion heads are found in the sculpture. The cave is under a big rock which is supported by the rocks on all sides with very good ventilation.
